Video Information provided in an interview with Matthew Stubstad: "I have known and been a fan of This Holiday Life for a while. The guys in the band are great people and I have wanted to work with them for a long time. I started making a video for them last year, the video had slow-motion light bulbs exploding in reverse and some other neat things, but I had too much school and not enough time to make the project I wanted.
But Scott (lead singer) and I stayed in contact. They started to record their newest album The Beginning of the End of the World. Scott sent me a sample of the song Motivation and I could not wait to get started.
They finished the album and we started making the music video for Motivation. The shooting schedule for this video was intense. We shot 14 different scenes and 10 different locations. And we shot this all in one full day and one long night. It was fun but a lot to keep track of and a lot of energy. Because I was not only directing the video I was also shooting and producing it (essentially a one man crew, besides my home boy Austen Hesseling who was Assistant Producer and played the bands Sleazy Agent). We shot most of the film in and around Encinitas, my home town. I find it helpful to film there because I know it like the back of my hand, location wise that is.
The guys in the band were a dream to work with. They were hyped up and eager the whole time, no egos, just great people. When the band got their equipment set up for their performance scenes they became electric, performing great every take. They are a great band to see live if you ever get the chance.
During the scenes where they had to actually act I had a great time directing them. It was good practice as a director to work with non-actors. The work was also rewarding when I saw a good performance out of them.
We finished shooting the film and then the long process of editing began. My good friend and great editor
Alik Griffin cut this film for me. We spent many late nights re-cutting scenes making this fast paced film work. He put a lot of time into this project and it really shows.
All in all I loved making this film. It was nothing but rewarding. In fact the band and I had such a good time making this film and were so happy with the end product that I will be making the next music video or two for their album The Beginning of the End of the World."
