Video Information provided in an interview with Matthew Stubstad: "One night I was at my friend Garret's house. He had people over and I showed them all a film I had just made called The Contract. One of the people in the crowd was James Coleman. As we watched the film together he kept asking me questions about how I made it, etc. After we had completely finished the film he explained to me that he is in a band called Love Campaign and that they want to make a music video for their new song called Dead at 21.
On that same night James took me to his car and showed me the song, it was great! Some time passed due to school and life, but then we got on track with making the video happen. This was going to be my first big music video so I had to make it great, from style to concept. So I met up with James (lead singer) and Justin Froese (lead guitarist) to get their input as to what they wanted from the video. A lot of talking and Rico's fish tacos later and we had our concept.
The plot in the music video comes from the story of a girl who inspired the song, but the real girl is still alive :)
I knew I wanted to film the band performing on top of a mountain with a great view behind them, so we went searching and eventually found the perfect spot. The only trouble was that the location was right next to some houses and we planned on filming the band perform their song at 6am. So the drummer Vito covered his drums with towels and they played away. Luckily no one woke up.
We shot this film in 3 days. The first day started at 9 pm and ended at 7 am. In that day we shot all of the performance sections. We got some great shots on top of the mountain at magic hour while the sun was rising. The next day we went to a local restaurant called Captain Kenos in Encinitas to shoot the story section of the film, they were very nice and let us use the whole place.
We ended up in down-town San Diego that night at hotel lobbies trying to shoot the ballroom dance scene. We were kicked out of a few places but we kept on and got the shots we needed. I did what we had to in order to complete this film. This film was mostly shot guerrilla style with no budget and a one man crew of me (Matthew Stubstad).
The lead actress in the film was great. Her named is Elana Hendler. She is very talented and gave a great performance. I was also very happy with Jame's performance, for not being an actor I got some good material from him.
It was a lot of fun working with these guys. They were humble, stoked and easy to work with."
